How to contact the venture capitalist or angel investors

You have your whole presentation tools ready and all the documents in the right order. You came up with a clear high concept pitch and the elevator pitch is the first thing you think about in the morning. You are ready to meet your investor. But how are you going to do that?

The way you contact an investor depends on the type of investor you are going to get in touch with. There are three main ways you can meet and investor with many variations. Someone you know can introduce you to a partner of a venture capital fund. You can meet them online or offline or you can contact them cold.

Venture capitalists and angel investors get business propositions very often and they built sort of a shield for this. The best way to contact one of these people is to find someone who can introduce you to them. You do not necessarily have to know this person yet, it only has to be more accessible. It can be another entrepreneur, which you know or can contact which the VC may trust because he funded his business also. It can be another investor in a different branch than your venture or an expert in a market that you happen to know. Do not ignore lawyers or accountants that you may know although they may not have a big influence. Go to your Board of Directors or Board of Advisors if you have one and ask them if they know somebody you can talk to. Let all the people in your network know that you are actively searching for investors.

Go to the conferences, presentations or meetings in your field. Investors will surely be there and it can be easier to introduce yourself or make yourself noticed. Don’t ignore the online medium. There are a lot of venture capitalists and especially angel investors who have blogs or have accounts on Twitter or other social networks. Try to start a conversation by commenting or replying to their posts.

If none of these methods works, you have only one solution left and that is to cold contact your potential investor. To do that visit the official page of the investment fund and find out the direct email address of the right partner or if it is an angel investor you will probably find his email on the website of the company he manages or on social networks. Do not send email to generic email addresses which tend to be the last stop. This is a good moment to use the teaser email we have talked about. Do not send them your complete business plan. That is the most important piece of your business and you should guard it with your life.

You are ready to contact your future investor, but first you have find out how you know if your business is attractive and what are the barriers of entry you have to consider. We will talk about this, tomorrow, in the next newsletter.
